Dante's INFERNO - In a nutshell.

The Divine Comedy is a long Italian narrative epic poem written by Dante Alighieri . Dante's works were very impressive and is an  epitome of greatest works of world literature.

The Divine Comedy deals with the journey of soul towards the God. The entire poem is divided into three parts as Inferno, Purgatorio and  Paradiso. Here Dante himself is the narrator.

Inferno means Hell in the Divine Comedy.
It deals with the 9 Circles of hell as described by Dante.

This is the illustration of Dante's INFERNO.

 Before entering into inferno   a soul has to make a choice whether to go into inferno or Paradiso. A soul who cannot make a choice are rejected by hell as well as heaven. This phase is called Ante - Inferno.

Virgil - Dante's guide joins him at the entrance of Inferno , where the following words are inscribed above the gate of hell.

"ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER HERE"

Dante continues his journey with Virgil into inferno.

CIRCLE 1 : LIMBO

                  No physical punishment is given in the first circle. Soul's who are unbaptised or who didn't accept Christianity experiences lonliness with desperation to meet god.



Circle 2 : LUST

                  The Soul's lust are endlessly blown and spiraling in the winds of a violent strom.




Circle 3 : GLUTTONY

              Because of their cold nature , the Soul's of the esurient or gluttonous suffers the coldness of s ceaselessly icy rain.They are consumed in ground . Pelted with debris and sewage.




Circle 4 : GREED

                 The Soul's of the greedy are consumed in a pit of smelting gold ,  they try to claw their way back to escape , only to be swept back into the pit.




Circle 5 : WRATH

       An endless battle of  wailing souls takes place on a murky swamp. The gloomy are surmerged underwater and forced to breath.




Circle 6 : HERESEY

            Soul's are entrapped in a flamming pit, guarded by demons for those who try to escape.




Circle 7 : VIOLENCE

             Those who possesed a thrist for violence to oneself , to others or to the creation of god are drowned into a lake of boiling blood.




Circle 8 : FRAUD

        Soul's are thrown into a pit of darkness, Endlessly beaten and torchered by demons. Heads are turned backwards of fortune tellers .




Circle 9 : BETRAYAL

"It's better to kill oneself than to betray" . 


Betrayal is the nineth and last circle of hell . Soul's who betrayed their  family , friends , loved one , country are frozen into Ice . Satan in imprisioned in ice from the waist down in the very center of circle nine , displayed as a trophy of treachery.



Dante along with Virgil crosses Inferno and now arrives in Purgatorio.Here Dante's journey through hell completes.
